Flamengo made a commanding start to their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Esperance de Tunis in Philadelphia on Monday. The Brazilian side controlled the game from the outset, registering an impressive 80% possession and forcing the Tunisian outfit into just two attempts on goal.

The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Guillermo Varela’s run down the right led to a fine cross to Luiz Araujo, who cushioned the ball into the path of Giorgian de Arrascaeta to finish with precision. After the break, Esperance showed spirit, with Youcef Belaili driving play and testing Flamengo’s keeper Augustín Rossi, although a close-range effort was kept out.

In the 70th minute, Flamengo doubled their lead. A clever through-ball from Jorginho sent Araujo clear, and he curled a neat left-footed strike into the bottom corner. The victory means Flamengo sit level with Chelsea atop Group D, both sides having secured 2-0 wins in their openers. The two heavyweights now prepare for a Friday showdown that could decide the group’s fate.
