The viewer is left to draw their own conclusion and although I liked that the film did that, another part of me would have liked a definitive conclusion. Having said that, it’s probably better that it was left open-ended because too many documentaries have an obvious agenda meant to convince the viewer of some particular point of v In the aftermath of the 2012 Golden Globes ceremony , Hollywood “in-crowd” types like George Clooney and Meryl Streep are favored to take home the gold for acting, while multiple Globe-winning films such as The Artist and The Descendants are considered heavyweight contenders for the coveted Best Picture Os This year, some expected that trend to continue, with the ultra-likable Neil Patrick Harris drawing the host gig for the 2015 Oscars show. However, moviegoers weren’t all that interested in seeing Barney Stinson celebrate the year in film, as the awards broadcast scored the lowest ratings in quite some t The likeliest culprits most people will point to are the Best Picture nominees themselves. Ever since expanding their top category to include a maximum of 10 films back in 2009, the Academy has done a solid job at ensuring that commercially successful works are recognized. Over the past couple of years, big box office hits like Avatar , Inception , Django Unchained , and Gravity were putting together Oscar campaigns in addition to drawing in large cro Filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent Film festival games Missions|https://moviefestivalhub.com/ homage, The Artist , led the way with six Globe nods total; co-writer/helmer Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and director Tate Taylor’s The Help were close behind. That heavily-praised dramedy and popular literary adaptation (respectively) managed to snag five nominations each, putting them one ahead of Descendants star George Clooney’s latest directorial effort, The Ides of March and Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris , which each stacked up four nods. Steven Spielberg’s latest dramatic offering, War Horse , was right behind that pair with three nominations in technical categories; Albert Nobbs also managed to secure three nods, in the areas of acting and original music, while Moneyball landed three for Best Drama, Actor, and Screenp Yes, Pixar’s Inside Out is nominated for Best Animated Feature, but it would have been nice to see the HFPA nominate the critically-acclaimed computer animated movie for Best Comedy too – seeing as that doesn’t carry the qualifier of being the best animated film of the year. And if both The Martian and the decidedly serious Joy count as “comedies”, then so does Quentin Tarantino’s darkly funny single-setting western/murder mystery, The Hateful Eig Several indie and lesser-known critical-darlings received little-to-no love from the Hollywood Foreign Press, including titles like The Tree of Life , Warrior , Drive , Martha Marcy May Marlene , and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy . Similarly, there were more than a few surprising snubs (no Best Director nod for David Fincher on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo ? No Winnie the Pooh for Best Animated Feature?) and certain films fared far better than anticipated (namely, The Ides of March ). However, there were also more than a few no-brainers (ex. Meryl Streep being nominated for The Iron Lady ) and some rather unexpected choices (ex. Ryan Gosling in Crazy, Stupid, Lov Surprisingly, neither Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin nor Disney’s 2D animated critical darling, Winnie the Pooh , is a contender for Best Animated Feature. However, despite Stephen Daldry’s critic-dividing Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close landing a Best Pic nod over a more universally-beloved title like, say, Warrior , that selection was (unfortunately) expec In 2014, however, the Academy seemed to slip back to their more obscure choices. Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper was the only Best Picture nominee to gross over $100 million by the night of the ceremony and had made more than its seven competitors combined. The average domestic total for a nominee this year was just $77.6 million: an average which is respectable, but a far cry from the averages of the past two years, where multiple blockbusters contended for Best Pict The documentary has an interview with a New York Times art critic who discusses modern (or abstract) art and the reasons behind the sometimes apparently insane valuations for what looks like some paint splashed on a canvas. Part of his explanation is that the story behind the artwork contributes to the value. What has the artist gone through, for example? In Marlas’s case part of the value is due to the fact of her young age and the apparent sophistication of the w Martin Scorsese’s Hugo led the way with eleven nominations, stacking up many a nod in the technical categories, while Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist was close behind with ten total. Academy members clearly love a good homage to the magic of old-fashioned cinema – be it a Hollywood flick set in Paris or a French production set in Hollywood. Moving o
