The game of bingo evolved from the Lo Giuco de Lotto which was the Italian lottery game that was developed in 1530. The game evolved into two different versions, the British version and the American version. The British version is based on ninety numbers and is played in land-based bingo halls in Great Britain, Ireland and Australia. The American or 75 number version predominated elsewhere worldwide. The British version is played on a rectangular grid called a ticket that has nine columns and three rows with five numbers on each line. The American version is played on a square five column by five row card with one letter of the world bingo over each vertical line.

The mechanics of play are identical for each version. A number is drawn in an independent and random manner and is announced. Players check their cards/tickets and cover the number where it occurs. The process is repeated until there’s a winner. The object of the game is to be the first player to complete the required pattern.

The kinds of patterns rely on the game version. Within the British version, a regular bingo is achieved with the completion of one line. Two and three line games are special games.
